CBD oil may be the next big thing in Tennessee! The University of Tennessee is sponsoring a study to determine whether CBD has any effect on chronic pain sufferers. Meanwhile, these products are already being used legally and successfully by many Tennesseans as a treatment for health conditions.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD oil is a plant extract. It’s made from industrial hemp. The difference between CBD oil and hemp oil is that hemp has a negligible amount of THC (the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana), but it’s rich in CBD. Hemp must have 0.3% or less THC to be considered industrial hemp, and therefore legal under federal law.

The effects of CBD are manyfold, but the treatment of chronic pain is one of the conditions most successfully treated with it, along with the treatment of epilepsy, multiple sclerosis (MS), anxiety, and depression. Studies are showing promising results for the treatment of diabetes, arthritis, and other autoimmune disorders as well.

CBD is a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis, but it doesn’t produce any of the high associated with marijuana. CBD can be extracted from hemp or marijuana. Hemp has trace amounts of THC, but the psychoactive ingredient found in marijuana has been removed. However, CBD is not psychoactive, and hemp products generally contain a small amount of THC to create that effect. The same is true for CBD oil derived from marijuana – it contains traces of THC to give you a “high” as a result of its medical qualities.

CBD-rich Hemp Oil

The oils derived from hemp must be below 0.3% THC concentration (or contain less than 3% total cannabinoid content). For many years, hemp-based CBD oil has been used to provide health benefits.

In late 2014, a new product called CBD oil became popular on the market. It was created by extracting CBD from some hemp plants and combining it with an industrial solvent used in the extraction of THC. The result is an easily dissolved clear liquid that can be taken orally to treat pain and other conditions. Some people use it just as a supplement but, as a new CBD oil formulation, this product could be consumed alone or mixed into other foods or drinks.

CBD Oils Containing Higher Levels of Cannabidiol (CBD) are Contained within Some Forms of Cannabis (Marijuana).

In the United States, federal law forbids the creation of hemp with THC concentrations above 0.3%, so products with higher CBD levels are derived from marijuana. These products can contain up to 10% CBD and 0.6% THC (the concentration of THC in these cannabis strains is about six times greater than the average cannabis strain).

Federal laws do not limit the amount of CBD contained in hemp-derived or marijuana-derived industrial products – CBD oils, capsules, edibles, and so on. These products may be used by people who are not sensitive to THC and have no ill effects from it, but you should be aware that these products are NOT strength-regulated for dosage or purity. The same is true of CBD oils and concentrates.

How Does CBD Oil Work for Pain Relief?

THC is the primary medicinal ingredient in marijuana, but it does not get people “high.” Instead, cannabinoids (cannabinoids are chemicals produced by the cannabis plant) interact with specific receptors in cells throughout the human body. These chemical compounds are also now known to interact with cells throughout the body and have recently been shown to influence other systems throughout the body (such as immune response). It is well known that certain cannabinoids target specific receptors in cells throughout our bodies. This allows cannabinoids to bind with a cell receptor, activate an enzyme or ion channel, and relay messages across a cell membrane. The cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2 are activated by the cannabinoids produced by marijuana (THC) and hemp (CBD).

The endocannabinoid system is involved in many physiological processes, and research shows that CBD can help reduce inflammation, aid sleep, improve anxiety levels, reduce pain perception, and lower risks for metabolic disorders, cancer, and heart disease.

CBD oil is used for several conditions including chronic pain management. In the United States, many people are using CBD to extract from marijuana to offset some of the side effects of chemotherapy or other medical therapies. CBD oil is also being used to treat epilepsy in children.

Tennessee’s CBD Oil Industry and Regulated Laws

The State of Tennessee has a very limited medical cannabis program. However, the Industrial Hemp Pilot Program (IHP) allows certified, CBD-rich hemp to be grown in Tennessee. This program was implemented by House Bill 1128 (Act 116 of 2014) which became law in June 2014.

Currently, all hemp grown under the IHP is from imported hemp seeds and the production of CBD oil is currently allowed only where local cultivators provide a Certificate of Analysis for each batch of raw product sold and this certificate contains information about the source variety, plant and chemical composition and any other chemical additives used or present in the final product.

The Tennessee Department of Agriculture regulates these hemp growers and holds the responsibility for testing hemp products for THC concentrations before CBD can be extracted from the plant. In addition, strict labeling laws exist for each CBD oil product in Tennessee. The State requires that each batch of CBD oil is labeled with a Certificate of Analysis which includes information on the source variety, plant, and chemical composition, and any other chemical additives used or present in the final product.
